All Things Skin

Let’s talk about all things skin! In this blog post, we are going to be covering skin types, skin conditions, and product recommendations to help your skin maintain a healthy skin barrier.

First, let’s start with skin type. While you are born with a set skin type, skin conditions may also appear throughout your life. Everyone has a skin type, but not everyone has skin conditions. Skin conditions are a product of your environment, diet, lifestyle, products and so many other day-to-day factors. Skin types include dry, normal, oily, sensitive, and combination.

Did you know?

The most common skin type is combination skin! This means you can have a blend of dry, oily, or normal skin.

Dehydrated skin, a skin condition, is prevalent in most skin types. You can have dehydrated skin that’s oily, a combination, or all of the above. When your skin is dry, it’s lacking the natural oils your skin produces. Dehydrated skin lacks water and in turn, may look dull.

How do you know which skin type you have? Try a wash test! Wash your face with a mild gentle cleanser, wait about 30 minutes, and see how your skin feels. Are you seeing any oil production? Are you oily in certain places like your T-Zone, but the rest of your face has no oil? Do you have minimal oil? Or does your face feel dry and tight? Your results here can determine which skin type you have!

Another factor is pore size. The larger your pores, the more oil your skin produces. Dry and normal skin types have smaller pores. You can always see an esthetician or dermatologist to help you figure out your skin type and what products may work for you.

Now that we’ve covered skin types, let’s focus on our skin barrier. Your skin barrier is present in the outermost layer of your skin and is there to protect your skin from pollution, UV rays, infection, dehydration, and so many other extrinsic (external) factors. These things are often referred to as free radicals. Damage to the skin barrier may be caused by over-washing which strips the skin of its natural oils, exfoliating too often, harsh soaps or detergents, stress, allergens, prolonged sun exposure, or smoking to name a few.

Some symptoms of a damaged skin barrier are loss of elasticity, dry skin that’s easily irritated, and your skin‘s ability to retain water. If you’re constantly reapplying moisturizer because your skin still feels dry after. This could be a good indication that your skin is unable to hold the moisture. A lot of the time you’ll see eczema as a skin condition that comes from your skin barrier function not being properly intact.

There are so many ways to help if your skin is damaged. You can see an esthetician that can help you get on a well-rounded skincare routine and perform regular facials. Less sun exposure and using a broad-spectrum SPF every day will protect your skin from UV rays. Moisturizing and hydrating your skin daily, eating healthy, drinking plenty of water, managing your stress, and avoiding smoking are additional ways to heal your skin.
